... very soon after the first mastectomy with additional removal of 13 lymph nodes, a cord became more and more visible in the armpit when i made my exercises for improving the mobility of my left arm.
the physiotherapist with a qualification in manual lymphatic drainage looked at it and said this would be a nerve or a tendon that is sticked to the operated area and as i will go on with my exercises, the cord will disapear.
but when physiotherapy / lymphatic drainage was finished, the cord became more and more visible and palpable and extended to the elbow area. and there it also began to hurt when i stretched my arm. i'm curious and didn't want to accept the situation, so goggle became my friend once again.
i didn't even had a word for the phenomenon, but after several hours of research i came to an article in a magazine for physiotherapists written by ms. elisabeth josenhans (pdf file in german, i don't know if there exists a translation).
with this text i went to a friend of mine - she is a physiotherapist and an osteopath, but doesn't manual lymphatic drainage - and she began to treat this cord. and it was resoundingly successful!
already at the first treatment, there was a huge improvement and as written in the article it was really noticeable for the therapist and for me that something has ripped, but it wasn't hurting at all. and from that moment the arm was pain-free and much more mobile.
in course of time some other smaller cords were appearing at the arm to the wrist, but also in the hole left chest area below and above the scar, one was crossing the collarbone up to the neck - but we removed them all.
i don't know, if the radiotherapy i had, was bringing forward the fibrotization of lymph vessels. none of the other breast cancer ladies i was talking to had something similar, but in the discussion boards all around you can read more about the problem.
since mars 2013, about 16 months after surgery there where no new problems and i hope this will last ...
(an english term i found on this topic was "axillary web syndrome")
********

it's been a long time ... / lang, lang ist's her ...
... after finishing the prophylactic herceptin treatment in december 2012 the oncological follow-up check went well. in january i begun to move on for the prophylactic mastectomy on the right side and in the same surgery i wanted to have removed the unloved portacath. it did a great job during all the infusion thing, but nonetheless was really disturbing in my everyday life.
my plan was to do this in march.
at the end of january i had a follow-up check at my gynaecologist with mammography and an ultrasonic followed by a mri because of the complicated structure of my breast tissue. in the discussion after, my doctor said she wanted me to go to a psychologist and to another breast-center to become really aware of what i want to do with my remaining breast.
when all these dates were finally completed it was may and prophylactic mastectomies were
on everyone's lips thanks to ms jolie. however i want to clarify that i have no genetic loading.
i'm part of a really huge relationship and the only one with breast cancer is a sister of my father in her seventies.
on june 12th i had surgery and all went well. this mastectomy was much more easier to go through than the first one. back then on the left side some lymph nodes had also to be removed to keep out of harm's way and therefore i had/have some problems with my left arm. but that's another story for another day. and i had a good recover from chemo and antibody treatment.
in my head now the breast cancer treatment is finally over. the pending follow-up checks for me are rather prophylactic ones.

... sometimes i also knit - or crochet.
the top is made with seta tweed from lang (75% silk, 25% cotton) in olive with a 3.5 knitting and crochet needle.
first i knitted a swatch out of one skin, washed and dryed it.
then i drew a grid with the right measures in a cad and plotted this out. to this i added the planned neckline and my knitting chart was born.
or so i thought, but the behaviour of my swatch and knitting with only a few stitches wasn't the same.
i began with a provisional cast on on the right shoulder and knitted the front piece down to the armpit. then i removed the cast on scrap yarn and did the same with the back piece. i excluded the left shoulder because this part should be completed with some free form crochet.
adding some stiches under the armpit i joined the knit to a ring and knitted until the planed waist decrease should began. then i putted the stiches to a scrap yarn, washed it, dried it and tried it on. it was looking absolutely horrible!
after my first disappointment i decided to take it as a new gauge swatch and restarted the project.
the second effort was succeeding. i tried to give the top some waist fit with some decreases and increases. at the bottom end i added some seed stitch.
armhole and neckline i stabilized with single crochet.
then i began with the free form crochet - i crocheted and unraveled and crocheted and unraveled and crocheted and ...
ultimately happy after many different attempts i sewed the crochet part to the knitted one with some ordinary sewing thread.
i'm pretty satisfied with the result and the yarn has really a soft handle.

asymmetric stripes / asymmetrische streifen
an experiment made in july, but i just found the time to take some photos.
... to make reference to the asymmetric body shape i tried to sew an asymmetric blouse.
the chosen fabric was an old curtain and just meant as a (perhaps wearable) muslin.
i moved the button border in the front to the "breastless" side and gatherd the other side to have enough room for the remaining one. i made a seam in the back to follow my swayback.
the hemline was a try to boost the asymmetry.
the sleeves were planed to be longer, so i sewed an elbow dart, but later i shortened them to three-quarter length.
it was a nice try, and perhaps it would look better in another fabric - but to be honest, i'm not convinced about the idea - the slanting hemline in the back doesn't make anything for wide hips.

bras news / bh-neuigkeiten
... for a quick first help i made up my own post-mastectomy-surgery-bras.
i selected a bandeau shape. a center front seam gave me the possibility to add a bit of shape to the right side by a horizontal dart.
i used a transparent elastic instead of an edging elastic in the bottom and finished the top with an elastic lace.
to accentuate the asymmetry i made just one strap in the same material as the bh body. to have the possibility to fit the strap-length, i added a piece of an old bought bras with all its functional parts.
this wasn't the best decision - because on the gouge left by the mastectomy the bras always slips down at this area and i have to give it a tug from time to time.
the closure taps i had to made of my own, because i didn't found them to buy in such a wide version. it has cost me quit a bit of time - but thanks to an instruction with lots of pictures in a german sewing forum made by the member "deo" (bras closure taps / to look at the photos you have to be logged in ) i'm quite happy with the result.
conclusion: a quick way to get a minimal support.
for a second try i took apart a fairly fitting bras.
i used the right cup with half of the front centerpiece to the side seam and unstiched all the edging elastics and the underwire casing.
the rest of the bras i complemented with a more or less suitable fabric.
i added a continuous new edging elastic at the bottom and turned over the other edges with a transparent elastic. and of course restiched the underwire casing.
the left bras strap i completed with a piece of the old bras strap with all its functional parts.
to give it a less cobbled together look i added the lace from the other cup to the front center.
i know the topic underwire and breastcancer is an controversial one.
my tumor was in the upper inner quadrant out of the reach of any underwire.
in my opinion a really good fitting underwire, not pressing into the breast tissue, should be no problem.
conclusion: a very good support and a nice shape for the remaining breast.
i'm not sure about the next step in bras-sewing, but i will keep you current ...

it's me again / ich mal wieder
now it's more than a year when i tried to start with this blog -
but sometimes life is taking a surprising twist ...
i was diagnosed with breast cancer in june 2011, a week before my 40. birthday.
because of the size of the tumor and the fact that he was grown together with the underlying chest wall "they" decided to make a neoadjuvant chemotherapy.
after 4 doses of adriblastin and endoxan ( doxorubicine and cyclophosphamide ) every second week and 12 doses of taxol and herceptin ( paclitaxel and trastuzumab) weekly there was surgery in november 2011. at my own request it was a mastectomy of my left breast.
in january/february 2012 25 radiation treatments during 5 weeks followed.
for the hole 2012 a herceptin dose every third week should minimize the risk of a relapse.
i rejected a five years antihormone therapy with tamoxifen.
my hair regrows curly at the moment - whatever, it's hair!
my current plan is to make a mastectomy right, when the cancer treatment is completed because on the complicated structure of the breast tissue.
for me it's no question to make a reconstruction nor will i use a prothesis.
now it's time to sew and knit something else than chemo caps!
my first attempt will be a one-breast-bra.
researches in the world wide web weren't so fertile. there was one version on "www.chikaradesign.com" (no longer accessible) and another one on "www.souti1.com" (no longer accessible)- but they're not within my reach. and yet before the cancer it was my personal ambition to sew my own bras - why not take the occasion ...

easter bunnies
this year i sewed the "japanese knot bag" after the tutorial from Helen Heath
which is widely scattered all over the web.
which is widely scattered all over the web.
i scaled the pattern down to mach the base to a compact disc, that i just put in the finished bag for a better stand. at least i added three threads to symbolize the whiskers and filled it up with some chocolats.
