... last summer, about 7 months after my left mastectomy with additional removal of 13 lymph nodes, i noticed one day that my left forearm and the thumb area where slightly swollen in the evening and when pressing with my fingertip a dent remained. unfortunately, the swelling didn't go away completely not over night nor over weekend.
my family physician made me a prescription for manual lymphatic drainage.
the therapist made the mld twice a week and applied a kinesio tape after every treatment.
because of the slight intensity of the swelling she suggested not to wear a compression arm sleeve and gauntlet, but to try kinesio taping instead and it worked.
the swelling is gone - but when wearing clothes with a tight sleeve i feel a slight paresthesia and when i don't react, it begins to swell.
i also had to cut into the elastic band of my left garden glove to make it workable for my hand.
it was now quite well for a long time if i pay attention to my clothing and try to rest and elevate the arm when it begins to feel bad.
i also imagine that it has become better after abandoning bras wearing - perhaps the pressure in the chest did also affect the lymphatic circulation in the arm?
this summer i had more problems during the hottest days, but it seems to settle back with more moderate temperatures.
for the moment everything is fine!
********

fibrosing lymph vessels / fibrosierende lymphbahnen
... very soon after the first mastectomy with additional removal of 13 lymph nodes, a cord became more and more visible in the armpit when i made my exercises for improving the mobility of my left arm.
the physiotherapist with a qualification in manual lymphatic drainage looked at it and said this would be a nerve or a tendon that is sticked to the operated area and as i will go on with my exercises, the cord will disapear.
but when physiotherapy / lymphatic drainage was finished, the cord became more and more visible and palpable and extended to the elbow area. and there it also began to hurt when i stretched my arm. i'm curious and didn't want to accept the situation, so goggle became my friend once again.
i didn't even had a word for the phenomenon, but after several hours of research i came to an article in a magazine for physiotherapists written by ms. elisabeth josenhans (pdf file in german, i don't know if there exists a translation).
with this text i went to a friend of mine - she is a physiotherapist and an osteopath, but doesn't manual lymphatic drainage - and she began to treat this cord. and it was resoundingly successful!
already at the first treatment, there was a huge improvement and as written in the article it was really noticeable for the therapist and for me that something has ripped, but it wasn't hurting at all. and from that moment the arm was pain-free and much more mobile.
in course of time some other smaller cords were appearing at the arm to the wrist, but also in the hole left chest area below and above the scar, one was crossing the collarbone up to the neck - but we removed them all.
i don't know, if the radiotherapy i had, was bringing forward the fibrotization of lymph vessels. none of the other breast cancer ladies i was talking to had something similar, but in the discussion boards all around you can read more about the problem.
since mars 2013, about 16 months after surgery there where no new problems and i hope this will last ...
(an english term i found on this topic was "axillary web syndrome")

it's been a long time ... / lang, lang ist's her ...
... after finishing the prophylactic herceptin treatment in december 2012 the oncological follow-up check went well. in january i begun to move on for the prophylactic mastectomy on the right side and in the same surgery i wanted to have removed the unloved portacath. it did a great job during all the infusion thing, but nonetheless was really disturbing in my everyday life.
my plan was to do this in march.
at the end of january i had a follow-up check at my gynaecologist with mammography and an ultrasonic followed by a mri because of the complicated structure of my breast tissue. in the discussion after, my doctor said she wanted me to go to a psychologist and to another breast-center to become really aware of what i want to do with my remaining breast.
when all these dates were finally completed it was may and prophylactic mastectomies were
on everyone's lips thanks to ms jolie. however i want to clarify that i have no genetic loading.
i'm part of a really huge relationship and the only one with breast cancer is a sister of my father in her seventies.
on june 12th i had surgery and all went well. this mastectomy was much more easier to go through than the first one. back then on the left side some lymph nodes had also to be removed to keep out of harm's way and therefore i had/have some problems with my left arm. but that's another story for another day. and i had a good recover from chemo and antibody treatment.
in my head now the breast cancer treatment is finally over. the pending follow-up checks for me are rather prophylactic ones.

it's me again / ich mal wieder
now it's more than a year when i tried to start with this blog -
but sometimes life is taking a surprising twist ...
i was diagnosed with breast cancer in june 2011, a week before my 40. birthday.
because of the size of the tumor and the fact that he was grown together with the underlying chest wall "they" decided to make a neoadjuvant chemotherapy.
after 4 doses of adriblastin and endoxan ( doxorubicine and cyclophosphamide ) every second week and 12 doses of taxol and herceptin ( paclitaxel and trastuzumab) weekly there was surgery in november 2011. at my own request it was a mastectomy of my left breast.
in january/february 2012 25 radiation treatments during 5 weeks followed.
for the hole 2012 a herceptin dose every third week should minimize the risk of a relapse.
i rejected a five years antihormone therapy with tamoxifen.
my hair regrows curly at the moment - whatever, it's hair!
my current plan is to make a mastectomy right, when the cancer treatment is completed because on the complicated structure of the breast tissue.
for me it's no question to make a reconstruction nor will i use a prothesis.
now it's time to sew and knit something else than chemo caps!
my first attempt will be a one-breast-bra.
researches in the world wide web weren't so fertile. there was one version on "www.chikaradesign.com" (no longer accessible) and another one on "www.souti1.com" (no longer accessible)- but they're not within my reach. and yet before the cancer it was my personal ambition to sew my own bras - why not take the occasion ...
